How PM Modi Celebrated International Yoga Day at the UN Headquarters

“Yoga is not a religion. It is a science, science of well-being, the science of youthfulness, the science of integrating body, mind, and soul.” - Amit Ray

Yoga is a light, once lit will never dim. The better your practice, the brighter your flame.” - B. K. S. Iyengar

“Yoga is the journey of the self, through the self, to the self.” - The Bhagavad Gita

Yoga is an ancient practice that originated in India and has been embraced by millions of people around the world for its physical, mental, and spiritual benefits. On June 21, 2023, the world marked the 9th International Day of Yoga, a day that aims to raise awareness of the many benefits of practicing yoga.

Mr. Modi, who is here on the first leg of his maiden state visit to the US at the invitation of President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden, led a historic event at the UN Headquarters here to commemorate the 9th International Day of Yoga, attended by top UN officials, diplomats, and prominent personalities.

"I'm delighted to see you all. And I thank you all for coming. Friends. I'm told that almost every nationality is represented here today," Mr. Modi told the gathering.

He was joined by the President of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly Csaba Korisi, Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, and New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

The prime minister, wearing a customized white yoga T-shirt and trousers, thanked people for coming here from far away to attend the celebration.
The highlight of this year’s celebration was the yoga session led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, which saw the participation of top UN officials, envoys from across the world, and prominent individuals.

In this blog post, we will share with you some of the key moments and messages from this historic event and how you can join the global yoga movement.

What is International Yoga Day and why do we celebrate it?

International Yoga Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 2014, following a resolution proposed by PM Modi in his address during the opening of the 69th session of the General Assembly. The resolution was endorsed by a record 175 member states.

The resolution notes “the importance of individuals and populations making healthier choices and following lifestyle patterns that foster good health.” In this regard, the World Health Organization has also urged its member states to help their citizens reduce physical inactivity, which is among the top ten leading causes of death worldwide, and a key risk factor for non-communicable diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and diabetes.

But yoga is more than a physical activity. In the words of one of its most famous practitioners, the late B. K. S. Iyengar, “Yoga cultivates the ways of maintaining a balanced attitude in day-to-day life and endows skill in the performance of one’s actions.”

Yoga was also inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2016.

The theme of this year’s International Yoga Day was “Yoga for well-being”, which reflects the growing recognition of yoga as a holistic approach to health and well-being.

How did PM Modi lead the yoga session at the UN Headquarters?

The event was organized by the Permanent Mission of India to the UN, which invited people to join the historic session and make yoga part of their lives. The event was also live-streamed on UN WebTV for millions of viewers around the world.

PM Modi started the session by greeting everyone with a “Namaste”, a traditional Indian gesture of respect and greeting. He then led everyone through a series of simple yoga poses and breathing exercises, such as Tadasana (Mountain Pose), Vrikshasana (Tree Pose), Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose), Shavasana (Corpse Pose), and Pranayama (Breath Control).

He also explained the meaning and significance of each pose and how they can help improve one’s physical and mental health. He encouraged everyone to practice yoga regularly and make it a part of their daily routine.

What did PM Modi say in his video message on International Yoga Day?

In his video message on the occasion, PM Modi said that India has always nurtured traditions that unite, adopt and embrace, and urged people to eliminate contradictions, hurdles, and resistances through yoga. He also said that yoga is free from patents and royalty payments, and belongs to everyone.

He said that yoga is an invaluable gift from India’s ancient tradition that embodies unity of mind and body, thought and action. He said that yoga is a way to discover the sense of oneness with oneself, the world, and nature.

He also highlighted the benefits of yoga for physical and mental health, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. He said that yoga can help boost immunity, reduce stress, enhance mood, and promote well-being.

He also appealed to everyone to make yoga a mass movement and spread awareness about its benefits to every corner of the world.

How can you join the global yoga movement?

If you are inspired by PM Modi’s celebration of International Yoga Day at the UN Headquarters, you can join the global yoga movement by following these simple steps:
